Blind Dancers from India takes The India Home by Storm! (August 6th, 2008)
Four children, all visually impaired, came all the way from Bangalore, India to perform classical Bharat Natyam, Kuchipudi and folk dances at SNAP Eastern queens, New York on August 6, 2008. There was thunderous applause from 164 seniors of various ethnic backgrounds that included seniors of Indian origin at the end of the 45-minute show.
Manjappa Muniyappa and Dinesh Reddy are the boys and Anitha Appaji and Rupini Eidde Gowda are the girls from Shree Ramana Maharshi Academy for the Blind, Bangalore that performed the dances under the guidance from Mrs. Sashikala. Dr. Vasundhara Kalasapudi , President of India Home, provided residential accommodation to the dance team. Mrs. Anuradha provided transport to the team.
On behalf of India Home, thanks were offered to the dancers, to all the seniors that showered support to the visually challenged dancers and to the authorities of SNAP Eastern queens.

Independence Day at SNAP (August 15, 2008)
Everyone enjoys freedom, especially on India's Independence Day
Everyone in India enjoyed freedom when India declared independence on August 15, 1947. After 61 years, Seniors from India Home, enjoyed the festivities organized at SNAP Eastern Queens, New York in connection with the India's Independence Day. Not only the ethnic Indians attended the celebrations on August 13, 2008, all the 190 Seniors at SNAP enjoyed the songs, dance and speeches made on the occasion. A sumptuous lunch, courtesy of Mamta Parwani, was served to all the seniors. Flags of India and the US were hoisted at the venue. The celebrations started with a group singing of a national song, Vande Mataram - Bow to thee Mother - with a celebrated radio artist Kanchan as the lead singer. Mahendra Yagnik gave a rousing speech to the audience. Rabindra Sangeet rendered by Chhabi Biswas, Rani De and Eda Ganguly enthralled everyone. Vimla Shah rendered a song beautifully. As a special invitee, Mahita Bandlamudi, a student, sang classical south Indian songs and she received a special ovation from everyone. Radio artist Kanchan esang "Ye maalik tere..." song so well, the audience joined her to everyone's delight. Lata Sharma sang a song very well. Dr. Satish C. Varma spoke about India's Independence.
A group of dedicated senior women from India Home danced the Garba Dance and it was a treat to everyone. The dancers included Nila Sutaria, Gayatri Shukla, Janu Bhatt, Asha Yagnik, Mira Vaswani, Minakshi Shah, Mamta Parwani, Hansa Shah, Kashmira Shah and Niluben Agwani.After the dance program, a senior, Pitchamma Valluru, sang Telugu songs in classical Karnatic musical style. Satyanarayana Gavarasana read a poem " desamunu preminchu manna (love the country)" by a famous Telugu poet - Gurajada Apparao - and rendered it into English. Ranjan Acharya sang a beautiful song. Mamtaji gave a short speech urging all the seniors to help the India Home in every respect.
National Anthem of India - Jana Gana Mana - was sung by all and the lead singers Mala Verma, Mira Vaswani and Kanchan made the national anthem a memorable one.
Janak Dutt and Satyanarayana Gavarasana compeered the function to a grand close with thanks to Dr. Vasundhara Kalasapudi, President, India Home, to the authorities of SNAP Eastern Queens and to Joel and Joanna for the strategic support.
