Good Morning,
Since August, I had gone thru two major open right eye surgeries and two laser right eye surgeries due to my irregular high eye pressure. Of course there were involving many risk factors, but I had no other choice but, to do the surgeries to bring my eye pressure down to save my vision from blindness… The surgeries were glaucoma/cataract with Ahmed®️ Glaucoma Valve shunt for the right eye. Surgery was successful and my pressure is below normal and ‘am under recovery process for couple of months…

In a healthy eye fluid is made in the front of the eye and flows out through the trabecular meshwork which is a part of the drainage angle. If fluid doesn’t flow out properly eye pressure increases and damages the optic nerve… Glaucoma is a silent thief of sightGlaucoma has no symptoms in its early stages. In fact half the people with glaucoma do not know they have it..! Having regular eye exams can help your ophthalmologist find this disease before you lose vision. Your ophthalmologist can tell you how often you should be examined…

The Ahmed®️ Glaucoma Valve is a surgical implant used to treat severe glaucoma by lowering intraocular pressure (IOP). It consists of a tiny tube connected to a small plate with a valve which drains excess fluid from the eye to a reservoir under the eyelid preventing damage to the optic nerve. This device is implanted when medications and laser therapy are not effective and its built-in valve helps regulate fluid flow to prevent complications like excessive drainage… Ahmed®️ Glaucoma Valve shunt surgery is a procedure that uses a tiny valve implanted in the eye to drain fluid and lower Intraocular pressure, often for advanced or refractory glaucoma. The surgery involves creating an artificial drainage system with a plate and tube to reduce the risk of complications like hypotony (low eye pressure). Recovery typically involves restrictions on strenuous activity and eye rubbing, and the may require careful follow-up due to potential complications like infection, encapsulation, or tube erosion.
Glaucoma is much more common among older people. You are six times more likely to get glaucoma if you are over 60 years old. The most common type of glaucoma, primary open-angle glaucoma, is hereditary. If members of your immediate family have glaucoma, you are at a much higher risk than the rest of the population… While you can’t prevent glaucoma, you can avoid vision loss from it by having regular comprehensive eye exams and following your doctor’s treatment plan, which mayinclude using prescription eye drops as directed. Consistent use of eye drops is crucial, even if you don’t feel any symptoms, as they prevent further vision damage…
Glaucoma awareness is crucial because it’s often a “silent thief of sight” with no early symptoms and can lead to irreversible vision loss, including blindness…
I wish our India Home Senior Center will have special lectures on the same to our senior members from professional eye doctor…
Best regards,
Jayant.
