Housing
India Home’s housing work is driven by a clear goal: to ensure that immigrant seniors have access not only to affordable housing, but to homes that are culturally familiar, socially connected, and supportive of aging with dignity. Our housing portfolio includes both long-standing community-based models and new affordable housing developments currently in progress.
The Need We Are Addressing
India Home’s housing strategy responds to a persistent and growing gap in New York City’s senior housing system: the lack of culturally responsive, affordable housing for immigrant seniors, particularly South Asian and Indo-Caribbean communities.
Key challenges include:
- Affordability pressures- many seniors in Queens are rent-burdened and face limited access to stable, income-aligned housing options.
- Cultural and linguistic isolation- even in affordable housing, seniors often live in environments that do not reflect their language, food, or cultural practices, leading to social isolation.
- Limited access to supportive, non-institutional care- seniors often need assistance with daily living, healthcare navigation, and benefits access, but prefer community-based settings over institutional care.
- Fragmented housing and services- housing and supportive services are often disconnected, creating gaps in stability and continuity of care.
How this need was identified
This work is grounded in more than 17 years of direct service delivery across Queens. Through ongoing case management, senior programming, and community engagement, India Home consistently observed patterns of housing insecurity, isolation, and unmet cultural needs—directly informing the development of our housing models.
Our Housing Approach
India Home’s housing model is built to address these challenges by integrating affordability, culture, and support services into a single ecosystem of care. Our approach prioritizes:
- Culturally familiar living environments
- Integrated supportive services and case management
- Community-based, non-institutional housing models
- Long-term housing stability paired with social connection designed for accessibility and livability
- Integration of India Home’s supportive services model
- Designed to combine affordability with cultural accessibility
This project is currently in the development and pre-construction phase.

Each home includes:
- Private bedrooms with shared kitchen, dining, and living spaces
- On-site supportive services and coordinated case management
- A culturally familiar environment, including language, food, and daily customs
